Research: Introduction to Proper Research
Over the past 2 weeks, students have been using their Google Classroom to walk through a Animal Research Hyperdoc. While going through the Hyperdoc, students had the opportunity to watch mini clips about animals and then practiced collecting research by writing 3 facts they learned after each animal's mini clip. After our basic research, we took a virtual field trip to the San Diego Zoo in California. We were able to learn about lots of zoo animals and even view live cams of different animal enclosures. After our virtual field trip, students picked their own animal, accessed Kid Rex (a kid-friendly) search engine to fill in basic facts about their animal of choice:
1) appearance 2) diet 3) habitat 4) behavior 5) fun facts
Finally, students practiced presenting their research by creating Flip Grids.

Inventions--Design Process: If the Pigeon Could Invent
Prior to Thanksgiving Break, 1st Grade students learned about various inventions and inventors. We discussed how the inventions must use the Scientific Method or Design Process in creating something new. After discussions, we read one of our favorite books, Don't Let the Pigeon Stay Up Late. In the book, the Pigeon is trying to persuade the reader to let him stay up late. After reading, students brainstormed if the Pigeon could invent something, what would it be. Once they brainstormed they chose their favorite creation and created a story about the Pigeon and his invention. Students dictated their stories in to a Flip Grid. This activity is helping us become more comfortable taking risks and sharing our ideas with others.

Scientific Method: Slim the Lizard
Students have been learning about the Scientific Method. In our Slim the Lizard Science Experiment, students will walk through the steps of the Scientific Method with a hands-on activity. Students will collect questions, document their hypothesis, procedures, observations, and draw conclusions in their very own Slim the Lizard Log Book. First the students met Slim (a growing lizard). We discussed what they thought would be the most efficient way of making Slim grow the largest. Students worked together to form our BIG QUESTION (Problem: Step 1). Our question is: Will Slim the Lizard grow the largest in hot, room temperature, or cold water? We then discussed what a hypothesis is and how to make one. Students recorded their own hypothesis in their log books. The next step was to list materials needed, collect our materials, and list our procedures. We are now underway with making observations. We can't wait to see which temperature of water makes Slim grow the largest!!! More information to come.
